TRIPPING ON VINCENT

The classic post-impressionist painting by Vincent Van Gogh "Starry Night" underwent a digital transformation, thanks to Petro Vrellis, a Greek digital artist and electrical engineer, using the open source C++ openFrameworks. In this new, interactive version, you’ll see swirling patterns of color set in constant motion.

This is a pretty amazing way to rediscover an already incredible painting. We’d love to see more classic works of art updated in this fashion – then put into an iPad app for all of us to enjoy.

OUT FROM THE BOX

We already knew it, some italians are genius. Although it's not common to find really inspired projects over there, mainly because many talented people left the country due to restrictions and awful laws. Said that, when you find something like the Milan based bunch Recipient, it's worth a hundred of other average "seen before" things. Their aim is to experiment the interctions between new technologies and new forms of art, with an eye on what could emerge from the collision of these two worlds.

The results are crazy cobinations like historical architechture being melted toghether with futuristic motion graphics through an unusual projection mapping session, or the analog world going digital in a pythagorean device (aka Rube Goldberg machine).

Stay hungry, stay foolish someone said... well we're sure these guys will.

The Pistolshrimp's projection below is inspired by the tarot, a set of cards used for games and fortune-telling. Commissioned in the 15th century, the Visconti-Sforza tarot deck is the first one to include major arcana and one of the oldest known to exist.

TRIBAL GUN

Mr. Boonstra and Parra created a music video for Put Your Gun Away, an iconic summer anthem by Rimer London featuring South African singer Cata Pirata.

The video takes us through a world inspired by French synth-pop where dutch electro star Rimer London and Cata Pirata battle it out in a "carnival cut-out" by means of Parra's iconic characters.

LIVE CUBES

'ISAM' , the new Amon Tobin's live show just ended, and those who had the luck to witness it won't forget it for a long time. Tobin stepped away from previous DJ centric performances, and instead performed a large scale live audio/visual experience to select cities around the world with a breathtaking projection mapping and architectural project designed in conjunction with Blasthaus, VSquared Labs, Vita Motus Design, Leviathan and others.

SON OF A PREACHER MAN

Stephan Doitschinoff (aka Calma) is a self-taught artist based in Bahia and São Paulo, Brazil. As the son of an Evangelical minister, Stephan spent his entire childhood absorbing the visual vocabulary of religious art. As an artist, he has developed his own unique language and style through imagery which creatively combines Afro-Brazilian folklore with Baroque religious iconography, as well as Alchemic and Pagan symbolism.

Stephan’s street alias, Calma (Portuguese for: Calm) is also a shortened version of con alma (Latin for: with soul). He has exhibited in museums and galleries in the US, Brazil, and Europe.

From the artist: “I personally see the church as an archaic institution that always aimed to control the masses. I think it is an appropriate symbol for corrupt modern institutions like big corporations, media channels, and governments.”

RAISE OF THE MACHINES

Fashinating and scary at the same time, these incredible animatronic machines were made by John Nolan.

The bass loaded soundtrack is "Medusa's path" from the album Always Outnumbered Never Outgunned (2004) by The Prodigy.

HOLI COWLORS

Every year the Hare Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork, Utah puts on the biggest Holi (festival of colors) celebration in the Western Hemisphere. In 2011 the Spanish Fork Police department estimated that over 40,000 people attended in the first day alone of the two-day festival.

But what's all about? It's about celebrating the triumph of good over evil and ushers in the spring season. The festival commemorates a Hindu myth about a witch, Holika, who burned children in a fire. One child repeated the Hare Krishna mantra as he was carried into the flames and the witch was burned instead. At the Spanish Fork festival, rock and roll, R&B, and other modern interpretations of the mantra are played by musicians throughout the day and chanted in a call and response game between performers and attendees. The main event of each festival is the coordinated throwing of colored powder, when the sky above the crowd is filled with rainbow puffs of dye.

I-PERSPECTIVE

The god of head tracking Johnny Lee now has two disciples overseas by the names of Jeremie Francone and Laurence Nigay.

Following the path shown by their spiritual guide, they achieved the head tracking nirvana just by using the front facing camera of an iPad (or iPhone) in order to create a glasses-free monocular 3D display, as the messiah did a few centuries ago with the holy wiimote in his hand. Thy will be done.

Do you remeber what Melbourne-based installation artists Eness did for the premiere of Tron Legacy? Well he did it again, this time bringing a new perspective to action sports by fusing interactive art with skiers and snowboarders.

To achieve this spectacle a 21' inflatable sphere hovered between hits as proprietary software mapped 3D visuals onto the snow and sphere. Riders were tracked via an infrared camera as they flew through the air.

When i was a little dwarf I had a thing for blending toghether milk and ink. After a few days my room started to smell like rotten cheese and my mother threw away all my colorful experiments. Due to the following video, after several decades, now i get that it wasn't such a big pity... just because I never used dishsoap.

A day in the life of a miniature Whistler, the biggest little ski area in the world. This amazing video by Switchback Entertainment documents a bird's eye view of teeny, tiny Whistler Village and surrounding Whistler Blackcomb mountains, making it a real life snow globe.
