CURIOSITY FILMS

How many cameras can we find on Curiosity rover, the wall-e like robot that is actually rooming around the surface of Mars? Let's find out.
The rover's mast features seven cameras: the Remote Micro Imager, part of the Chemistry and Camera suite; four black-and-white Navigation Cameras (two on the left and two on the right) and two color Mast Cameras (Mastcams). The left Mastcam has a 34-millimeter lens and the right Mastcam has a 100-millimeter lens. There is one camera on the end of a robotic arm that is stowed in this graphic; it is called the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI). There are nine cameras hard-mounted to the rover: two pairs of black-and-white Hazard Avoidance Cameras in the front, another two pair mounted to the rear of the rover, (dashed arrows in the graphic) and the color Mars Descent Imager (MARDI), for a grand total of seveteen cameras.

Despite this unbelieveble ammount of hardware, it' absolutely not easy to output such an ultra-resolution, smooth-motion, detail-enhanced, color-corrected, interpolated from the original 4 frames per second to 30 frames per second footage. This video took fours weeks in the production, and plays real-time at the speed that Curiosity descended to the surface of Mars on August 6, 2012. If we think about it, it's the first proper sci-fi movie from the red planet. 20th Century Fox better start bewarin of Nasa entertainment.

KEEPING UP

If get asked about who the father of personal computers is, most of people may probably name Conrad Zuse, or Bill Gates and his early mentor Ed Roberts. Well if we focus on the word "personal", they could be wrong.

Yesterday Jack Tramiel, The Polish-born American businessman best known for founding Commodore International passed away at the age of 83, and he's probably the one who we should point our finger at. His life is an extraordinary example of initiative, commitment and work ethic.

After the German invasion of Poland in 1939 his family was transported by German occupiers to the Jewish ghetto in Łódź, where he worked in a garment factory. When the ghettos were liquidated his family was sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp.

In November 1947, Tramiel emigrated to the United States. He soon joined the U.S. Army, where he learned how to repair office equipment, including typewriters.

In 1955, Tramiel signed a deal with a Czechoslovak company to assemble and sell their typewriters in North America. However, as Czechoslovakia was part of the Warsaw Pact, they could not be imported directly into the U.S., so Tramiel set up Commodore Business Machines in Toronto. Tramiel wanted a military-style name for his company, but names like Admiral and General were already taken, so he settled on the Commodore name.

When Commodore released its first calculators, combining an LED display from Bowmar and an integrated circuit from Texas Instruments it found a ready market, but one day their lead designer, Chuck Peddle, told Tramiel that calculators were a dead end and computers were the future, so he was told to build one to prove the point.

Peddle responded with the Commodore PET, based on his company's MOS Technology 6502 processor. It was nothing but an instant success.

As prices dropped and the market matured, the monochrome (green text on black screen) PET was at a disadvantage in the market when compared to machines like the Apple II and Atari 800, which offered color graphics, and could be hooked to a television as an inexpensive display. Commodore responded with the VIC-20, the first personal computer to sell one million units, and then with the Commodore 64, which with several million units sold would go on to be the best-selling home computer of all time. It was during this time period that Tramiel coined the famous phrase, "We need to build computers for the masses, not the classes."

In September, Ron Artest — the Lakers’ burly, quirky, unfailingly unpredictable forward — legally changed his name to Metta World Peace. The first name is a Buddhist term meaning “loving kindness.” The last name is self-explanatory.

“Give World Peace a chance,” read a Los Angeles Times headline a week after the name change was stamped as official.

This is, more or less, what Artest intended when he made the change: to make the public, unwittingly or consciously, seriously or in jest, consider the concept.

“If you look at a young kid and you tell them, would they love world peace? They would definitely tell you yeah,” he said Thursday after the Lakers’ shootaround. “But as we get older, we change and we adjust to our environment. And we don’t think about little things anymore. But kids love, they love other kids. They love world peace.”

As the finals between Dallas and Miami are tied, we are still far to celebrate this year's champions. So today we choose to celebrate a true champion, one of the most dominant players of all times who retired just a few days ago after 19 years as a pro.

In his career, Shaquille O’Neal won four NBA championships and three NBA Finals MVP awards. He scored 28,596 career points and grabbed 13,099 rebounds.

Fellow NBA center Alonzo Mourning, who won a championship with O’Neal in 2006 when they played for the Miami Heat, said:

"When you think of the center position, his name will be mentioned in that breath, he has got to be easily in the top five of all times. You throw in Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain at the top, and then you have Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon, Patrick Ewing and David Robinson. You have all those guys, but you can throw him in that top five easily, because of the amount of championships he has won."

It was a hell of a ride for sure, the only thing Shaq could regret is that he left 4,000 points in free throws. With just a few of those he could be one step higher on the NBA career scoring leaders.

It's codename was Project Cafè but we've called it Wii 2, Wii hd and any other possible name. Well, Nintendo's next console has now been officially unveiled, and it's name is Wii U.

Its design is so similar to the Wii, and it's also retro compatible with all Wii games and Wii peripherals, but inside is so much powerful as it features high definition graphics.

Nintendo love to reinvent the rules of the game. They did it first with the DS'touch screen before any smartphone had one, than with the motion controls of the Wii and a few months ago with the stunning esperience of a 3DS blasting stuff in your face without any glasses. So it's not a surprise today they did it again with the innovative new tablet controller of the Wii U. It incorporates a 6.2-inch, 16:9 touch screen and traditional button controls, including two analog Circle Pads. This combination removes the traditional barriers between games, players and the TV by creating a second window into the video game world. The rechargeable controller also includes a built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, rumble feature, camera, a microphone, stereo speakers, a sensor strip and a stylus.

It's going to hit the market (hopefully) in the first half of 2012, so we should have enough time to save our money.

A few days ago Richard Branson announced his brand new crazy initiative: after Virgin Galactic, which offers to rich people a chance to go on sub-orbital space flights, it's now time for Virgin Oceanic. The objective behind it is to take a piloted submarine to the deepest points of the Earth’s five major oceans in 2011 and 2012.

Chris Welsh, a submarine veteran, will pilot the Mariana Trench exploration with Richard Branson as backup and vice versa for the Puerto Rico Trench.
